Egypt wins first medal at Cairo World Cup

The Egyptian shooting team has delighted home fans by claiming it’s first medal at the World Cup being held at the Egyptian Shooting Club.

They bagged a silver medal after taking on Russia in the Trap Mixed Team event, a category that will make its Olympic Debut in Tokyo later this year.

Russia and Spain were the other teams to make it on the podium.

Russia took their fourth gold of the World Cup, courtesy of Alexey Alipov and Daria Semianova. It was a comfortable win over Egypt’s Ahmed Zaher and Maggy Ashmawy. Alberto Fernandez and Fatima Galvez of Spain took third place.

Egypt’s Ahmed Zaher said: “It's something very special to shoot in your own country. It puts a lot of pressure; to get a medal here is not very easy, so this medal is very special and means a lot. Tomorrow we will participate in Trap Team event, and it's a great opportunity win a medal. If you didn’t start good in individual you have 2 more opportunities. It's a good step from the ISSF."

Maggy Ashmawy said: “It’s my first World Cup medal and first experience to shoot under the lights. Even during training I never did it. It was a stressful competition, but we are glad that we were in the final and won this Silver, ”-

The competition will conclude tomorrow with the Trap Men’s Team and Trap Women’s Team events
