Chiara CAINETO fulfilled her dream, winning Gold at the Skeet Women Event. The final round took place in the worst possible weather conditions: rain was falling on the finalist and wind blowing on the range. The Italian finished in first place after outdoing RHODE of the USA and BRINKER in a shoot-off for Gold.

Chiara CAINERO if Italy is the Olympic Gold medallist of Beijing in the Skeet Women Event. The 30-year old Italian athlete won the three-way shoot-off for Gold against the US shooter Kimberly RHODE, Silver, and the German Christine BRINKER, Bronze.
All the three medallist ended up on the podium with the same score of 93 targets, plus the shoot-off, setting a new Final Olympic Record.
Chiara CAINERO was said to be one of the favourite after the last two seasons in which she had always performed between the firsts. She said a few weeks ago “I have no secret, I am just working hard to get there where I want to. ” And she got there where she dreamed: on the highest step of the Olympic podium of Beijing.
CAINERO had left her profession to become a professional shooter in 2004, following her Olympic dream which she fulfilled today “The best came in the worst day to shoot” said CAINERO at the press conference “You saw the results, I won a Gold with 93 hits plus the 2 more target in the shoot-off. This is a law result. It was rainy and windy, and we were cold down there.”
The Italian athlete had started the round in first place with a qualification score of 72 hits, and with one target of advantage on the following Sutiya JIEWCHALOEMMIT of Thailand, but she lost her advantage missing on the second and third stations “I lost four targets in this final, I thought I was out. When I saw that I was in the top three, I could not believe it. Conditions were difficult for everybody, today, luckily I am used to train under the rain, back home.”
In the shoot-off for Gold, CAINERO had to face Kristine BRINKER, the young World Champion that challenged her more then once in the last Olympic cycle, and the two times Olympic Gold Kimberly RHODE of the USA. The two opponents both missed the second target of the pair thrown, giving Gold to CAINERO “A shoot-off victory is even more precious!”
Continuing shooting for Silver, RHODE outdid 2 to 1 BRINKER, winning her fourth Olympic medal out of four participations.
“I am not getting used to this! - said RHODE – this is my fourth medal, won in this terrible weather… it has been great! I won two Golds and a Bronze in Double Trap, now this Silver in Skeet… what I will do in London? Maybe I’ll try trap!” “She is a top athlete – added her coach Lloyd WOODHOUSE - I know her since she was younger: she is a record shooter, and she can do even more in the years to come!”
BRIKER finished in third winning BRONZE, her first Olympic medal. The current World Champion could not retain her joy “I won! I won an Olympic medal! - she exclaimed right after the shoot-off - I lost the shoot-off, but I have a medal! Today was a terrible day to compete, with this rain…”
