25m Pistol Women Final: OTRYAD lost Gold in spite of shooting a record

Current World Champion CHEN is the new Olympic Champion of the Games of Beijing. The Chinese athlete remounted all the way from the third to the first place, shooting a new Final Olympic Record of 793.4 points. She overtook to the Mongolian OTRYAD, who set a record in the qualification and then lost the Gold only by 1.2 points, a few millimetres on the target. DORJSUREN of Germany won her second Olympic Bronze 16 years after the Games of Barcelona.

People’s Republic of China gained its third Gold medal in the shooting sport at today’s 25m Pistol Women Event, won by 30-year old CHEN Ying. CHEN fired a record total score of 793.4 points (585+208.4), setting the new Final Olympic Record in this event.
Starting in third place after the qualifications, current World Champion CHEN shot her way to the final firing four great series, remounting the disadvantage she had from the firsts. After the second final series she had already climbed up in second place, finishing in first ahead of all after the decisive fourth and last series.
“There was a five point difference between me and the lead but I had a similar experience before - commented CHEN after the round - I fired every shot calmly and then I overtook OTRYAD (qualification’s first). The audience helped me a lot. When I fired they were very quite, and when I shot an high score, they gave me warm cheering which initiated my desire to shoot well.”
CHEN’s Gold also helps the Chinese shooting team to get closer to the goal of at least equalling the number of four Gold medal won at the Games of Athens 2004. Together with PANG Wei and GUO Wenjun, CHEN reached the third Gold in shooting events for her country.
Silver went to the Mongolian shooter Gundegmaa OTRYAD, who missed the chance to win the first Olympic Gold ever for her country finishing in second only 1.2 points behind CHEN. She climbed up on the second step of the podium with a score of 792.2 points, after entering into the final round in first place with an Equalled Olympic Record of 585 points. “Althoughit is a little bit of a pity that I didn’t get the Gold medal I am still very happy - commented OTRYAD – I very feel relazex and relieved now!”
The experienced German shooter Munkhbayar DORJUSUREN won the second Olympic Bronze of her long and successful career with 789.2 points (587+202.2). The 39-years old athlete, winner of the Olympic Bronze of Barcelona 1992, has taken part in four Olympics editions “I am back on the podium, but here in Beijing has been difficult. I did not know the final hall, and the lights where very different from what I am used to. But at the end it was a medal! It was medal of 16 years of trainings. It was my dream. It was a big dream fulfilled!”
The Olympic Champions of Athens 2004 and Sydney 2000, Maria GROZDEVA of Bulgaria, made into the final round with a low qualification score of 583 points, not enough to threaten the medallist. She eventually finished in fifth place with a total score of 786.6 points, loosing the chance to establish the record of three consecutive Gold medal won in the same event.
