The race for places at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games is underway, with the ISSF World Championship Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun Doha 2026 playing a major role in the qualification process. A total of 36 Olympic quota places are available across the 12 individual shooting events, giving National Federations an important opportunity to secure their representation at LA28.

But how does the qualification system work, and what does an athlete need to do to earn a place for their country?

36 quota places on offer in Doha
The ISSF World Championship Doha 2026 offers three Olympic quota places in each of the 12 individual events: six men and six women across the rifle, pistol and shotgun disciplines.

The quota places are awarded to the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of the highest-placed eligible athletes in each event. This means that athletes compete not only for the world title and medals, but also for the opportunity to secure an Olympic place for their country.

To be eligible, athletes must achieve the Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) for their event during the qualification or elimination rounds of a designated Olympic qualifying competition.
How are the quota places awarded?
The quota places are determined by the final results of each individual event. The highest-placed eligible athletes secure places for their respective NOCs, provided the applicable qualification requirements are met.

There are also limits on how many places a country can obtain. At the  ISSF World Championship Doha 2026, an NOC can secure a maximum of one quota place in each individual event. Across the full Olympic programme, each NOC can obtain up to 12 places: six for men and six for women.

An athlete can obtain only one quota place for their NOC. If an athlete who has already secured a quota place finishes in a qualifying position in another event, the place is awarded to the next eligible athlete.
More than medals are at stake
With 36 quota places available, the  ISSF World Championship Doha 2026 represents one of the most important early milestones on the road to Los Angeles 2028.

For athletes, it is an opportunity to compete for world titles and make their mark on the international stage. For National Federations, it is a chance to take an important step towards Olympic participation.

The qualification journey, however, does not end in Doha. Further opportunities will be available at ISSF World Championships, World Cups and continental competitions throughout 2027 and 2028, as the world's best shooting sport athletes continue their pursuit of a place at LA28.
