With 200 days to go until the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026, anticipation is building for a historic moment as the Olympic Movement arrives in Africa for the very first time.

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) is proud to confirm that shooting sport will be part of the Engagement Programme, bringing the discipline closer to the public and showcasing its values to new audiences across the continent.

While not included in the core competition programme, shooting sport will play an important role through the Engagement Programme — an initiative designed to connect sports with communities, offering interactive and educational experiences for young people and spectators.

Through this platform, visitors will have the opportunity to:

- Discover the fundamentals of shooting sport
- Learn about safety, precision and discipline
- Engage with the sport in a hands-on and accessible way

This approach reflects a broader objective: to introduce shooting sport to new generations and inspire future participation across Africa.
The presence of shooting sport in Dakar is closely linked to its growing development across the region. Initiatives supported by the ISSF and its partners are helping to build stronger foundations for the sport, from grassroots participation to structured training environments.

Local opportunities such as training activities at facilities near Dakar — including in Thiès, just 45 minutes from the host city — provide practical access to shooting sport, combining education, safety training and technical development.

In parallel, collaboration with national federations, including efforts led by the Nigeria Shooting Federation, is helping to further promote and expand the sport’s reach in West Africa.
Dakar 2026 represents a landmark event, not only for Africa but for the global sporting community. As the first Olympic event hosted on the continent, it offers a unique opportunity to build bridges, inspire youth and promote inclusion through sport.

The inclusion of shooting sport in the Engagement Programme reflects its commitment to these values — using the discipline as a tool to educate, connect and inspire.

As the countdown continues, the ISSF looks forward to contributing to the success of Dakar 2026 by bringing shooting sport closer to communities and showcasing its role in youth development.

With 200 days to go, the journey towards Dakar is not only about competition, but also about engagement, discovery and the future of sport in Africa.
