ISSF Sport Director, Peter Underhill, has visited the Higher Technical Federal Teaching and Experimental Institution in Ferlach, Austria, continuing the strong relationship between the organisations.

This unique college provides very high-level education for students in the technical and science aspects of firearms design and manufacture, as well as other associated artistic skills required in their safe production.

It is the only institution of its kind in Europe and is totally Government funded and supported under the Austrian federal and educational system. Mr. Underhill met with the College Principal Silke Bergmoser and Director Professor Dr Florian Mayer.

This initial meeting allowed the ISSF and the college to explore opportunities for mutual benefits between both parties, especially where youth education and athlete future development and employment both inside and outside the sport was concerned.

Peter Underhill said: "There is much value to be had by a closer association and link between the international sport and this higher education centre, providing very high theoretical and practical based skills for young and mature athletes, if they so wish."

Not only does the college provide an excellent science and technical based curriculum covering all aspects of firearm engineering, mechanics, materials, design and construction in great depth, but also the curriculum covers specific engraving and artistic forms associated with sporting firearms.

This holistic education also has compulsory subjects such as geography, history, politics, economics and law as well as applied mathematics, natural science and sport. It caters for students from 14 to 18 years of age and by exception, mature students on a four-to-five year A Level course, both in the theoretical and practical applications of the firearms industry and associated technologies and art forms.

The ISSF and the Higher Technical Federal Teaching and Experimental Institution agreed to continue their relationship and association by further visits to both ISSF international events and promotion of each other’s shared values and qualities.
