The trio of Liu Yafei, Peng Xinlu and Zhang Liyuan set a new world record and new world junior record in the women's 10m air rifle team event, on their way to gold at the Asian Shooting Championship.
Led by Liu, they scored a total of 1902.0, being the first team to score above 1900 points and bettering the previous best of 1898.4, set by the United States in 2022. The Republic of Korea took the silver medal, followed by India with the bronze.
And while a trio of Chinese athletes made the final, it was India's Elavenil Valarivan who took gold, with a new Asian record of 253.6.
A group of six emerged in contention for medals at the elimination stage, but it was Valarivan, Peng Xinlu and the Korean Kwon Eun-ji who had moved away from the others. All were consistent shooters, but it was the Indian who was particularly proficient. Kwon would draw level when the field had been whittled down to four, but a costly mistake saw her fall behind and eventually finished third. Peng had a great gap of 0.7 to catch Valarivan, but could only reduce that by 0.1 points - finishing with a total of 253.0.
Kazakhstan's Islam Satpayev provided great strength in the elimination stage of the men's 10m air rifle final to win the gold medal. An understated start was made up for when he took control in the second stage. While he scored 9.9 twice, he also scored 10.7 on three occasions. He managed to duck ahead of Lu Dingke of China, who had a great battle. A combination of 10.8 and 10.9 from Lu propelled him to the top, but this was then followed by 9.9 and 10.0, giving Satpayev the lead again. The gap was close, but the Kazakh won with a total of 250.1 to Lu's 249.8. Park Ha-jun of the Republic of Korea took bronze.
The team title went the way of India thanks to the efforts of Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil, Arjun Babuta and Kiran Ankush Jadhav for a total of 1892.5. China were second with 1889.2 and the Republic of Korea third on 1885.7.
