Canada’s Tye Ikeda and Geovana Meyer of Brazil (pictured) earned the respective men’s and women’s Paris 2024 quota places for the 50m rifle 3 positions at the CAT XIV Rifle and Pistol Championships in Buenos Aires.

Both took silver medals at the Championship of the Americas as golds went to two American athletes who earned Olympic quota places in 2022 – Ivan Roe and Sagen Maddalena.

Roe, who won gold at these Championships in 2022, began the second day of finals at the Argentine Federal Shooting Range by securing victory with a total of 453.7 points.

Ikeda, a 27-year-old currently world-ranked 57th in this event, earned his precious Paris place by finishing second on 446.9, well clear of third-placed home athlete Marcelo Zoccali Albizu.

Meyer, a 22-year-old student from Joinville who is world-ranked 15, finished fifth in these Championships two years ago and she raised her game at the ideal moment to earn Brazil its third quota place for the Paris Games.

She finished on 455.9 behind world bronze medallist Maddalena on 460.5 and ahead of Canada’s Shannon Westlake, who totalled 443.2.

Roe earned a second gold on the day, partnering Timothy Sherry and Braden Peiser as the United States took the team title ahead of the home representatives Zoccali Albizu, Agustin Martin Petrini and Alexis Eberhardt.

Bronze went to the Brazilian combination of Leonardo Moreira, ISSF Athletes Committee chair Cassio Rippel and Eduardo Sampaio Goncalves.

Argentina also took silver in the women’s team event thanks to Salma Antorena, Diana Martinez and Amelia Fournel.

Gold went to the Mexican trio of Erendira Barba Guillen, Andrea Palafox and Elizabeth Nieves Coronado.

Four more Paris 2024 quota places are on offer at the Championships, which conclude on Sunday (April 7).

A total of 168 athletes from 21 countries are due to participate.
