Home shooter Eduardo Jose Lorenzo claimed an Olympic Quota place in men’s trap after winning silver at the Olympic Qualification CAT XIV Shotgun Championships staged in the Dominican Republic capital of Santo Domingo.

Lorenzo was one of only three shooters in the home team, the others being William Escobar and Domingo Lorenzo.

The Quota place for women’s trap was claimed by gold medallist Ana Walesska Soto Abril of Guatemala.

Lorenzo brought off his landmark achievement in the second of the two opening finals at the Championship of the Americas, which involves a total of 120 athletes from 16 nations.

He was beaten 47-44 by Derrick Mein of the United States, but claimed the Quota place on offer as the winner had already achieved that by winning the 2022 world title in Osijek.

Bronze went to Guatemala’s Jean Pierre Brol Cardenas, with Peru’s Alessandro De Souza Ferreira finishing fourth.

A second Guatemala shooter, Hebert Brol, finished fifth, one place ahead of Brazil’s Hussein Dariuch.

Guatemala - whose athletes are all competing as independents while their NOC is suspended from the Olympic Movement - won the team title, with Brazil finishing second and the United States third.

Soto Abril earned her Quota place in the women’s final after finishing three shots clear of Mexico’s Alejandra Ramirez Caballero to take the title 40-37.

Bronze went to Ryann Phillips of the United States, who finished one place ahead of her compatriot Carey Garrison, with a third US shooter, Ida Brown, taking fifth place.

Mexico’s Cinthya Clemenz Maya was sixth.

The United States earned team gold ahead of Mexico and Canada.

Tomorrow will see trap team men, trap team women and trap mixed team finals taking place.
