The third and last leg of the ISSF World Cup Series was officially closed in Larnaka, Cyprus, today.
The last official medal event, the men’s Trap final, took place yesterday (May 6), and saw the victory of Spain’s Antonio Bailon with a new world record of 46 hits out of 50 targets.
Today, trap shooters had a chance to test the new Trap Mixed Team event, which has been proposed by the ISSF for inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic program. 32 teams from 21 countries participated in the test, proving great interest toward the proposed event.
429 athletes coming from 61 countries competed in the five Olympic shotgun events here at the Olympic Shooting Range of Larnaka, between April 29 and May 7. The People’s Republic of China finished atop of the medal standings, with two gold won by Wei Meng and Wang Xiaojing at the women’s Skeet and Trap events. Italy followed in second, with 1 gold and 1 bronze, while Argentina and Spain tied in third with 1 gold medal each.
Three new world records were set during the event: Italy’s 10-time world cup gold medallist Daniele Di Spingo established a new Double Trap world record of 78 hits out of 80 targets; Wang Xiaojing of the People’s Republic of China shuttered the women’s Trap world record of 42 hits by scoring 45 targets in the final; and Antonio Bailon recorded 46 hits in yesterday’s men’s Trap event.
Larnaka’s was the last ISSF Shotgun World Cup stage of the season. Shotgun shooters will meet again at the 2017 ISSF Shotgun World Championship in Moscow, Russia (30 August – 11 September), before the closing event of the year - the ISSF World Cup Final - to be held in New Delhi (IND) from the 23rd through the 30th of October (to see the complete ISSF Events calendar, click here)
