Some years after becoming the 10m Running Target World Champion in Plzen (CZE) in 2008 and in Heinola (FIN) in 2009, Galina Avramenko of the Ukraine claimed the top of the podium in Suhl, where the ISSF Running Target World Championship is taking place.
In the semifinal, the Ukrainian shooter bested 29-year-old Olga Stepanova of the Russian Federation, subsequently facing and beating another Russian athlete, the 2014 World Champion in this event Julia Eyedenzon. Despite scoring the first point of the match, Eyedenzon then slipped under a 4-to-1 deficit, eventually losing with a 6-to-4 final score that delivered Avramenko her third World Championship title in this event.
“I know it didn’t look like I knew I won, or too happy, but I usually keep my emotions inside, and inside I was very very excited about being the World Champion!” Said the Ukrainian shooter moments before the medal ceremony.
In the Bronze medal match, China’s Zhao Li Li claimed her second ISSF World Championship medal after the Silver she won in Munich in 2010. She did it by beating Olga Stepanova with the final score of 6 points to 4.
Alongside the individual Bronze, the People’s Republic of China secured the top of the team’s podium thanks to Zhao, Yang Zeng and Su Li who finished with 1132 total points. Behind them, in 2nd position, placed the Russian Federation with Stepanova, Eydenzon and Irina Izmalkova, followed by the Ukraine with Avramenko, Viktoriya Rybovalova and Liudmyla Vasylyuk, winners of the Bronze medals.
The ISSF Running Target World Championship will continue tomorrow with the 10m Running Target Mixed Men event and the 10m Running Target Mixed Men Junior.
