50m Rifle Prone: Australia's Potent wins the world title in Granada, and plans for Rio 2016

The 52-year old athlete pocketed an Olympic quota place along with his first world title, and now aims to Rio 2016. The People's Republic of China claimed the teams Gold, ahead of Belarus.

Australia's 2008 Olympic Bronze medallist Warren Potent, 52, won today's 50m Rifle Prone Men event with 210.0 points, after qualifying for the final with 626.9 points, at the 51st ISSF World Championship in all Shooting events held in Granada from the 7th through the 20th of September.

 

Potent also secured the first Rio 2016 quota place for Australia, booking a slot for his fifth Olympic participation.

 

“I feel excited, relived and relaxed.” Said the Australian athlete.

 

“Qualifications went good, I shot consistently right to the end... I just let it happened.”

 

“In the final I just shot as good as I could.”

 

“I was really relaxed, today, no pressure. How did I manage it? I am really old, I guess.” Potent said, with a smile on his face. “I am 52!”

 

“I am going for Rio, that was always in the plans. And after that we'll see.” He added.

 

The top-5 finalists were awarded an Olympic quota, today.

 

Following Potent, the 2013 ISSF World Cup Final Bronze medallist Daniel Brodmeier, 27, from Germany, won the Silver medal with 208.6 points.

Bronze went to Belarus Yury Shcherbatsevich, 30, with 188.0 points.

 

Sergey Kamenskiy, 26, of the Russian Federation, did not make it to the podium. He ended up in fourth place with 167.0 points after setting a new world record of 632.3 points during the qualifications.

 

The People's Republic of China won the team event, which combines the scores fired by the three team members during the individual event. Lan Xing, Zhao Shenbo and Liu Gang scored 1870.8 points to finish atop of the podium. Belarus' Sergei Martynov, Yury Shcherbatsevich and Vitali Bubnovich followed them in second with 1870.0 points, while Bronze went to Serbia thanks to Stevan Pletikosic, Milenko Sebic and Nemanja Mirosavljev with a combined score of 1868.4 points.
