ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · New Delhi, IND

Lao Jiajie and Lin Junmin pocketed the men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol gold and silver at the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi, today. Bronze medalist Ruslan Lunev claimed Azerbaijan’s first medal ever in this event.

The 2017 ISSF Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun World Cup in New Delhi, India, continued today with the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men final.

For the third time in two days, the national anthem of the People’s Republic of China was played at the award ceremony, as Lao Jiajie climbed atop of the podium, joined by his teammate Lin Junmin in second place.

Lao, who had won a world cup silver medal in Gabala in 2015, moved in the lead since the beginning of the final match by nailing a 4-hit and two 5-hit series consecutively. He defended the top of the scoreboard throughout the whole match right to the last series, when his teammate Lin tied him at 31 hits.

The gold medal had to be decided through a shoot-off. Lao zeroed in, and with an unbeatable 5-hit series he secured his first ISSF gold medal with a total tally of 31+5 hits, leaving first-time participant Lin in second with 31+3.

“I am really happy about this medal. It qualifies me for the 2017 ISSF World Cup Final and that’s a nice achievement,” said Lao. “I am really proud of sharing the podium with my teammate Lin. This is China’s third gold medal in two days, I think this proves we are a strong and very united team.”

Azerbaijan’s Ruslan Lunev, 27, secured the Bronze medal with 23 hits out of 35, dropping out of the elimination-style match after the seventh series. The 27-year athlete, who participated in 28 ISSF World Cups since he started competing in 2006, had only advanced to the final twice - in 2013 and 2015 - and had never made it to the podium before. His bronze turned out to be an historical achievement for Azerbaijan, as the country had never won a world-level medal in this event since the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men was first introduced in the ISSF World Championship program in 1933.

First-time finalist Attanon Aekkata followed Lunev in 4th place. The 28-year old Thai shooter fired two fatal 1-hit series amid the final match, compromising his chances to move upon the podium, and eventually closing the round with 17 hits, six hits far from the medals.

Behind him, the third Chinese finalist, Lu Zhinming, 26, competing in his first ISSF World Cup stage, left the match after the fifth series, taking 5th place with 15 hits, while the home crowd cheered for Neeraj Kumar of India, 22, 6th with 9 hits.

Day-2 of the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi will see another medal match today, the men’s Trap Final, scheduled to take place at 15.30 (UTC+5.30).

The final will be broadcasted live on www.issf-sports.org and on the ISSF Facebook page.
