India, Russia and China shine on day 1 in Gabala

The first individual Gold medals of the ISSF Junior World Cup went to Indian shooter Subhankar Pramanick, who ruled the Rifle Prone event, to Russian Skeet Women athlete Alina Fazylyanova, and to Chinese shooter Qi Ying, who claimed the Double Trap Gold. The two non-Olympic events held today saw India and Kazakhstan finish atop the podium.

A total of five events took place today at the Gabala Shooting Club in Gabala (AZE), where the ISSF Junior World Cup is taking place.

 

50m Rifle Prone Women Junior

In the 50m Rifle Prone Women Junior event, one of the three non-Olympic events to be held in Gabala, Kazakhstan’s Violetta Starostina (18) pocketed the Gold medal with 621.6 points, preceding Anastasiia Galashina (19) of the Russian Federation, 2nd with 615.5, and Norway’s Jenny Stene (18), 3rd with 615.4.

 

On the team’s podium, Norway secured the 1st place, followed by the Russian Federation and India.

50m Rifle Prone Men Junior

In the first event of the ISSF Junior World Cup in Gabala, India’s grabbed three total medals, ruling the individual event with Subhankar Pramanick, who signed an impressive comeback in the second half of the match.

 

The 18-year-old, who was in 6th position after the 3rd series, hit the 10th ring with his following 11 shots, climbing the standings and grabbing the lead at the end of the 8th and penultimate series. There, he scored an almost-perfect 10.8, distancing his opponent Filip Nepejchal (17) by 1.7 points with only one shot left.

 

Despite scoring only 9.2 points with his final shot, Pramanick remained in 1st position thanks to Nepejchal’s 10.6, claiming the Gold medal with a 205.5 final score, while his Norwegian rival finished with 205.2.

 

The 2015 European Junior Champion in Maribor (SLO), Romania’s Dragomir Iordache (18), finished in 3rd place with 185.1 points.

 

Just outside of the podium, Russian Federation’s Timur Akhmedzhanov (18) finished 4th with 164.0 points, followed by Malaysia’s Zul Haziq Rosli (20) with 140.8. Norway’s Vegard Nordhagen (17) concluded 6th with 121.7 points, while his teammate Henrik Larsen (19) was the first to leave the match, as he placed 8th with 78.8 points.

 

Between the two Norwegian shooters, Qatar’s Ahmed Mohsen Alali (18) placed in 7th position with 101.4 points.

 

The team’s podium saw Norway claim the brightest set of medals, followed by two India’s team in 2nd and in 3rd position.

25m Standard Pistol Men

In the 25m Standard Pistol Men event, the second non-Olympic event scheduled for today, India’s Sambhaji Zanzan Patil claimed the brightest medal, while two Australian shooters completed the podium.

 

Sergei Evglevski and Thomas James Ashmore, indeed, respectively placed 2nd and 3rd, also securing the team’s Silver. The team Gold medal went to India, while the team Bronze was awarded to Qatar.

Skeet Women Junior

It took only one day for the Russian Federation to claim the highest step of the podium at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Gabala.

 

It happened in the Skeet Women Junior event, where 18-year-old Alina Fazylyanova secured the Gold medal with an authority win over People’s Republic of China’s Zhao Anni (18), who missed 5 of her first 6 medal match targets, paving the way for Fazylyanova’s victory.

 

The Russian shooter sealed her win with 14 target hits against Zhao’s 8.

 

In the Bronze medal match two Turkish athletes battled for a place on the podium, as 20-year-old Nur Banu Ozpak bested Izel Aydin (20) with the final score of 14 hits to 13. At the end of the qualification round Aydin tallied the highest score with 73.

 

To qualify for the Bronze medal match, Ozpak also had to survive a shoot-off against the second Chinese semifinalist, Che Yufei (17), who lost the tie-breaker and placed 5th with 12 targets.

 

Eliminated after the semifinal, Radka Mancikova (19) of the Czech Republic placed 6th with 10 target hits.

 

On the team’s podium, Turkey secured the Gold medal, followed in 2nd place by the People’s Republic of China and by the Russian Federation in 3rd position.

Double Trap Men Junior

The People’s Republic of China nailed a Gold-Bronze combo in the Double Trap Men Junior event in Gabala, where the second ISSF Junior World Cup of the season is taking place.

 

After they both finished the semifinal with 26 hits, People’s Republic of China’s Qi Ying (19) bested Russian federation’s Aleksandr Filippov (16) in the Gold medal match, after they were tied at 21 with only three doubles remaining.

 

The Russian shooter, appearing here in his first international competition, missed two of his last six targets, while Qi, also a debutant in an international match, crushed all of his clays and claimed the top of the podium with the score of 27 hits to 25.

 

In the Bronze medal match, another Chinese athlete pocketed the Bronze, as Su Run (20) bested Italy’s Jacopo Dal Moro (20) with the final score of 27 target hits to 23.

 

Both Su and Dal Moro had to go through a shoot-off against Russian shooter Danil Zimarev (18) to qualify for the Bronze medal match. In the tie-breaker, Zimarev shot first and missed from his very first station, concluding in 5th place with 25 hits.

 

Despite nailing the highest qualification score, Great Britain’s James Dedman (18) was eliminated after the semifinal and placed 6th with 23 target hits.

 

The team podium saw the People’s Republic of China claim the Gold medals, followed in 2nd place by the Russian Federation and in 3rd place by India.

The ISSF Junior World Cup in Gabala will continue tomorrow with four more finals: the 10m Air Pistol Men Junior, scheduled at 10:30 AM (UTC+4), the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Women Junior at 12:30 PM, the 10m Air Pistol Women Junior at 2:00 PM and the Skeet Men Junior at 4:30 PM.
